Documentation

Published: 2005-01-25 16:01:26

The System administrator handbook and Opera.ini explained documents there were originally written in 2001 for Opera 5 have sadly been overlooked and not updated much since then. Fortunately, that is going to change, and we are now working on an update for the next version of Opera. Most of the documentation, at least the parts that aren't directly about the UI, is still applicable, even though a lot of things have changed in Opera since version 5, but there are also several things that have changed.

With "we" I mean that I am not going to do the actual writing myself, but since I work a lot on the preference system in Opera, it is only natural that I am the one that the documentation people (person, actually) consult.

At last count, Opera has over 750 configurable options, so going through all of these is going to take quite a while. So don't expect the documents to be updated today. It will be a while before everything has been prepared. But at least you know we're working on it.

After a two hour session today, we went through and documented all the relevant options in the [User Prefs] section starting on letters A through G.

I think this is going to take a while... :wait:

I can't overstate how Herculean this task is. The Hydra only had nine heads to decapitate and there was but one beast to skin. Most of all this project can be compared to cleaning the Augean stables.

Who knows, maybe us users will actually get to find out some new tweaks to play with!
(will we?)

I'm quite sure you will. There are some very obscue settings in there that aren't available from the UI and that people normally don't want to change, but can do if they really, really, really want to.

We've actually managed to go through all of the settings now, it only took 1½ weeks. The document is not done yet, though, as there are several settings that have only been listed but not fully explained as the relevant responsible parties need to be involved.

One good thing that has come out of this is that the list of preferences is now down to below 700, and that the internal developer documentation has also been improved.

That's awsome... :) Looking forward to seeing the new documentation.
