Lucia

Published: 2005-12-13 07:12:10

Today is Lucia day, a day when in Sweden we traditionally celebrate that light will return, as this time is the darkest time of year, when there is only a few hours of light on the day. We also traditionally eat saffron buns called "Lussekatter" ("Lucia cats"). This is the day that I feel most homesick (even though there are some Lucia celebrations here in Norway, they are not as omnipresent as in Sweden), but this year I decided to do something with it, so I baked Lucia bread myself.

That, combined with watching the Lucia celebration telecast on Swedish TV in the morning, helps a lot against the homesickness.

I made quite a lot, since I am teaming up with a colleague this year to bake Lucia bread for everyone at the office. I don't think we made enough for everyone to eat, but at least those of us who come in early will get some. :-)
