They both make backup copies of your NON-PROTECTED software and both allow you to choose either a full disk or B.A.M. copy. The major difference between the two is that Single Drive Copy makes backup copies of your disks onto another disk with a single 1541 disk drive, where as Security Seven allows you to put your backup copies of your disks onto cassette tape. Both of these programs share some common terminology. Here is a small list: öcSOURCE DISK or SRC. This refers to the disk you wish to make a backup copy of. When prompted with SOURCE or SRC this is the disk the program is referring to. öcDESTINATION or DEST. This is the disk or tape you plan to copy the information onto. This is your BACKUP disk or tape. öcENTIRE DISK COPY This allows you to copy the whole disk, even parts of the disk which may not be in use. If you disk contains random access files like ZORK does then you will probably want to use this method. öcBAM COPY When you make a BAM copy of a disk it will only copy the parts of a disk which has been specified as being used in the Block Availability Map (See your 1541 disk drive user manual). This makes for a faster copy if there are free blocks on the disk and if you are using tape it will take up less space. This method is recommended for the majority of your disks. öcREAD ERROR If you are copying a disk and get read errors, it usually means either you have a bad disk, the program is a PROTECTED piece of software or the disk is not properly formatted (Refer to the 1541 disk drive user's manual for a complete explanation of the errors). öp öcTIPS ON USING SDC & SECURITY SEVEN When ever you backup a disk onto tape it is a good idea to VERIFY the backup to make sure you got a good copy. After you have finished the backup onto tape choose option on the main menu then rewind your tape to the start of the backup and proceed to Verify the disk. If you get a VERIFYING ERROR! you might have to switch the brand name of the tape you are using. Even some of the most expensive tapes are too thin and can stretch. I have found by personal experience that some of the cheap tapes work the best. If you still keep getting errors you may need to clean your cassette recorder heads. It is good practice when you start on a tape to zero the tape counter at the beginning and write down, on which tape at what count you put which disk. This information can then later be entered into TAPE-LOG so you can have an up to date printout of what you have where. When Security Seven is searching the tape for the header of your backup, the screen will be flashing colors quite rapidly. At this point you can hold down the RUN/STOP key to abort back to the main menu. If your are using Single Drive Copy or Security Seven and are reading or writing to a disk, you can hold down the RUN/STOP key to abort back to the main menu. If you try to see the directory of a disk and the light on your drive flashes rapidly, you should go to the main menu and press . Then keep pressing until you are told to insert your source disk. Now press <*> to abort. All functions should now work normally. NOTE: You can not have any other devices on when you use SECURITY SEVEN other than a cassette tape recorder, a 1541 disk drive, a monitor, and your computer. Any other devices such as a printer or extra disk drive can cause Security Seven to crash. These extra devices should not affect any other programs in the Disk Librarian system except Security Seven.
