IIRC, that's exactly what they were used for. My thought is that Commodore
was trying to cut the costs for the systems to make it look more
attractive for the schools... that way they could buy several computers,
but just one disk drive and printer to run them all off of. ISTR there was
a blurb in one of the numerous Commodore Magazine, but it's been a while.
