THE WORK=20 OF GOLD MEDAL AWARDEE

For over forty = years Dr=20 Catherine Hamlin has brought hope and restored the = future=20 prospects of thousands of women who have suffered the=20 catastrophic effects of obstructed labour. She has = conducted=20 thousands of repair operations, helped women to re-build = their=20 lives, raised funds to establish and maintain the Addis = Ababa=20 Fistula Hospital and trained numerous doctors and nurses = in=20 the treatment and care of obstetric fistulae.

Obstructed labour frequently causes = a=20 fistula resulting in urinary and/or faecal incontinence. = In=20 the developed world fistulae are rare. In resource poor=20 countries, particularly in Africa and Asia, it is = estimated=20 that about 100,000 women per year develop a fistula and=20 approximately 2 million women have an untreated = fistula,=20 (World Health Organisation, 2006). Arranged marriage at = a very=20 young age and subsequent early pregnancy are the main=20 contributing factors to the high rate of obstetric = fistulae.=20 In sub-Saharan Africa a large proportion of girls are = married=20 and pregnant before they are 16 years old and it is not=20 unusual for the girls to be as young as 13 or 14. The=20 undeveloped body of these child mothers leads to = difficulties=20 during pregnancy and labour.
