As far as I know, the 40xx with a 9" screen did not come with a board containing a CRTC. However, The later board, with the CRTC, has jumpers that can configure it to run the 9" monitor. This would be a replacement board. The Basic 4.0 ROMs will work in this board without modification. But, the Commodore parts lists show a replacement E000 ROM for this situation, presumably to make it look like the older system. I have never seen this ROM. Earlier versions of the ROMs will not work as they do not support the CRTC. Some Companies did sell modified PETs as specialized systems. I have no information as to how many of these companies there were or to what extent they modified the computers. IEEE488 bus failure is usually due to a bad 6520 or 3446(there are 3 of these). - This message was sent through the cbm-hackers mailing list.
