The warmth the 7805 produces is the result of 'difference in voltage' times current (Watt = Volt * Ampere). If the Vdiff is more the 3 Volt you can reduce it by placing a resistor or several diodes between the 7805 and the original powersupply. The 7805 will generate less heat in this way but this lesser heat is now generated by the R or Ds.I prefer the diodes because it is easier to spread the generated warmth.
