On Saturday it was raining in Edinburgh, where I was with Thea on a short honeymoon last week, so going to the cinema sounded like a good idea. Since we sometimes have problems agreeing on movies we both like we tend to end up with an animated movie, and since we both had seen trailers and reviews of Kung Fu Panda and wanted to see it, and it had premiered the day before, we went to see it.

Kung Fu Panda is about the group of Kung Fu masters known as “The Fearful Five”, and their greatest fan, Po, a slightly over-weight panda who works in a noodle restaurant by day but who dreams of becoming a Kung Fu master himself by night. Now he gets the chance.

Dreamworks have again managed to create an entertaining computer-animated movie, this is mainly a children’s movie and as such is a quite straightforward comedy without too much depth and subtleties. And, as the BBC reviewer pointed out, without many of the “grown-up details” that are often added. But that doesn’t mean it is only suited for minors, I think there only were a couple of children when we watched the movie at the 20:30 screening (which unfortunately didn’t actually start until around nine since Odeon show too many ads for their own best before the movies), and it worked just as well for grown-ups. The movie has a surprising low amount of moralising, and is instead just entertaining. Recommended.

Now we are looking forward to Disney-Pixar’s Wall·E, a small Wall·E action figure is already looking at me with sad eyes from my desk.
