Naming
Published: Tuesday 2004-04-20.
I am lagging a bit behind in the translation of www.debian.org after my Easter vacation, so I didn’ read issue 14 of Debian Weekly News until yesterday. In it, there is an article about some thoughts on naming of computers. So I thought that I, some weeks after everyone else, should tell about the naming scheme I have used for my home computers.
When I started naming my computers, which I didn’t come around to until the first time I installed Linux, I started with the most basic thing people do with their computers — cursing them. My favourite language for cursing is Finnish (which I do not speak otherwise), so I started looking for Finnish cure words to name my computers after.
My main computer is of course called
perkele,
and I also have machines called
helvetti, piru
and
paholainen.
My firewall is called
tuli,
which,
according to my sources
is supposed to mean “fire”.
All my computers at home can be looked up in my local
DNS
and are placed in the domain
intern.softwolves.pp.se.
There are of course exceptions to the rule, but none that are worth mentioning here.

Mina datorer är (lite gammal lista): Crocker Criminal Cochran Cheiftain Chicco Croink Codehead Chromium Cleopatra Cloe Catastrophe Chaos Curt Clic Cohiba
