My modems have been stored away since I moved into my current flat in the autumn of 2000 since I haven’t had a land-line to connect it to. Now I have one of those, so I got a modem out and connected it.
Since I have a permanent Internet connection (through which the phone is connected), and the BBS scene is quite small nowadays, it wasn’t the data communications I was the most interested in getting to work, but rather if I could get the voice functionality to work as an answering machine and use the fax functionality to send (and maybe receive) telefaxes. Fortunately, there are others that have tried to do the same, and after some experimenting, I got a system up and running that can answer when the phone rings, play back a message and store the answer on disk.
I have to test sending faxes later, when the line is opened for outgoing calls.
