Reflections from a Swede in Norway.

Here you will find my small graffiti board where I write about things I come to think about.

In my blog, I write about the general unfairness of life, about spam mail, vintage computers, board games, Norwegians, current and not-so-current affairs, technology and whatever else occurs to me — in other words, a glorious mess. All opinion expressed here are of course my own, and all similarities with any living people is of course intentional.

Lies, damned lies and statistics

Published: Saturday 2003-11-01.

Today I received a letter from Statistics Norway where they wanted me (yeah, me — “We cannot replace you with anyone else”) to answer a survey about health in vulnerable professions. Apparently, I am classified as a “IT consultant” in their register, which at least is partly right, and that group is one of the groups which is selected to answer the survey (1000 IT consultants from a total of 8000 participants).

Some questions were easy to answer, but there was one I especially got stuck at. What do you answer this?

“Do you feel that you have a positive influence on other people’s life through what you do in your work?’

Hello? I am writing a web browser! It’s not like I’m doing anything important, like my brother, who works as a nurse.

Positive influence on other people’ life... Well, coming to think about it, some seem to like the product, at least. But a positive influence?

At least it is nice to be allowed to participate, and if I send in my answers I can win a gift certificate!
